The CDC released an updated estimate of the number of people with autism. 1 of 59 children are diagnosed with autism. A few other statistics to note:
- About 1 in 6 children in the United States had a developmental disability.
- Almost half (44%) of children identified with ASD has average to above average intellectual ability.
- The total costs per year for children with ASD in the United States were estimated to be between $11.5 billion – $60.9 billion (2011 US dollars).
There is absolutely no need to be alarmed. If you want to be alarmed or complain over these numbers, Facebook is alive and well for that. These updates tell us awareness and understanding are having a positive impact. People with Autism and related disabilities are more accepted in their communities. Parents, doctors, and educators are more aware of indicators of autism than 10 years ago. Do we have a long way to go, absolutely, but we are making progress and that should be embraced. These statistics are reminders for us to continue educating and increasing our understanding about what neurodiverse people can offer our communities.
